Our network within Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft

As an institute of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, we benefit from a network of 72 institutes and facilities. As a member institute, we contribute our expertise to groups and alliances.

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is the leading organization for applied research in Europe. Its research activities are conducted by 72 institutes and research units at locations throughout Germany. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft employs a staff of more than 26,600, who work with an annual research budget totaling 2.6 billion euros. Of this sum, 2.2 billion euros is generated through contract research. Around 70 percent of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s contract research revenue is derived from contracts with industry and from publicly financed research projects. International collaborations with excellent research partners and innovative companies around the world ensure direct access to regions of the greatest importance to present and future scientific progress and economic development.

Fraunhofer-Group for Production

The Fraunhofer Group for Production is a research and development partner for manufacturing industry. Fraunhofer IEM is one of seven institutes and two Fraunhofer research institutions that provide a broad spectrum of technologies and services which help get companies ready for “production of the future.”

In this regard, Fraunhofer IEM contributes in particular its expertise in the model-based design of self-optimizing, safe production systems, extending from systems design to detailed specifications by the various specialist disciplines. Among other projects, Fraunhofer IEM and the partner institutes within the alliance are collaborating to establish a secure cloud-based infrastructure for industry 4.0 solutions—the Virtual Fort Knox.

Fraunhofer Adaptronics Alliance

The Fraunhofer Adaptronics Alliance focuses on the development, application and optimization of intelligent material systems and components. By cooperating within this alliance, the institutes seek to provide users with a primary contact for system development and in doing so to contribute to more efficient solutions for complex tasks within adaptronics.

As one of seven member institutes, Fraunhofer IEM provides its extensive expertise in the fields of design methods and intelligent technical systems. An important field within adaptronics is integrated due to the institute’s long-standing experience in the area of control engineering. Numerous research and industry projects have investigated and tested functional materials and intelligent actuators.

Fraunhofer ICT Group

Comprising 21 member institutes, the Fraunhofer ICT Group is the largest provider and most important contact point for applied research into information and communications technology in Europe. It places at the disposal of the business community and society as a whole key competencies for the exploitation of opportunities and the management of challenges associated with the widespread digitization of life. The member institutes cater to a broad spectrum of technologies, from fundamental research to practical solutions in the fields of computer sciences, mathematics and information and communications technology. In addition, the group supports national and international IT providers and users, especially among small- to medium-sized enterprises.

As one of the leading institutes for the development of secure software, Fraunhofer IEM will act as an associate institute in the Fraunhofer ICT Group, in which it will contribute its methodical competency for the creation of secure IT systems. Driving this research are scientists in Paderborn under Prof. Eric Bodden, Director of Software Engineering at Fraunhofer IEM and Head of the Chair of Software Engineering at the Heinz Nixdorf Institute, Paderborn University.
